Finding Joy in Motherhood

How I Found Joy in Motherhood Without Changing a Thing:
A Simple Daily Practice

Motherhood can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re pouring all your energy into your family, leaving little for yourself. For years, I struggled with feeling unfulfilled as a mom, but I discovered a simple practice that helped me rediscover joy without making any drastic changes. And the best part? It’s backed by science!

If you're feeling overwhelmed or burned out, this is for you.

The Struggles of Early Motherhood

I vividly remember the first year after my twins were born. I was still trying to be a present mama for my two- and four-year-olds, all while grieving my father's passing and letting go of the dream business I had built from the ground up. My days were filled with exhaustion and guilt. Despite being surrounded by my beautiful children, I felt lost and disconnected.

I wasn’t just tired. I was unfulfilled.

I was so busy taking care of everyone else that I neglected the most important person—myself. It wasn’t that I didn’t love my kids; I just couldn’t find joy in motherhood anymore. I knew something had to change.

What Was Missing: Showing Up for Myself

As moms, we’re often told that being selfless is a virtue, but no one tells us what happens when we give everything and leave nothing for ourselves. I needed something to remind me of the beauty and joy in my life. And that’s when I stumbled upon positive affirmations.

I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. How could simple statements help me feel better? But I had nothing to lose. I started incorporating affirmations into my daily routine. Just small moments where I’d remind myself of the love, joy, and potential around me.

To my surprise, I started to notice a shift in my mindset and my enjoyment in motherhood.

The Power of Neuroplasticity in Motherhood

The more I practiced positive affirmations, the more I noticed a change in my mindset. Science refers to this as neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to rewire itself based on repetitive thoughts and behaviors. By focusing on positive affirmations, I was literally rewiring my brain to seek out joy and possibility in motherhood.

At first, it felt forced. I’d catch myself thinking negative thoughts and I’d have to consciously challenge them with a positive affirmation. For example, when I’d think, “I’m failing as a mom,” I’d replace it with, “I’m doing my best, and that’s enough.” Over time, I noticed these affirmations became automatic. My negative thoughts were quickly replaced by empowering, uplifting ones.

How to Use Affirmations in Your Daily Life

You don’t need hours of meditation or a complete lifestyle overhaul to make affirmations work. Here’s how you can easily start incorporating them into your day:

  1. Morning Routine: Before your feet hit the floor, say an affirmation that sets the tone for your day. Something like, “I am capable of handling whatever comes my way today.”

  2. Affirmation Notes: Write positive affirmations on sticky notes and place them where you’ll see them—your bathroom mirror, your car dashboard, or even in your wallet.

  3. Reframe Negative Thoughts: When a negative thought creeps in (and it will!), consciously flip it. For example, if you think, “I’m not a good mom,” replace it with, “I am a loving and dedicated mom doing my best.”

  4. Affirm Before Sleep: As you wind down at night, reflect on your day and affirm your efforts. “I gave my best today, and that’s enough.”

Rediscovering Joy Without Changing a Thing

Incorporating affirmations into my daily life didn’t require me to change anything about my external circumstances. I didn’t have to give up responsibilities, find more time, or wait until the chaos of motherhood calmed down. The change was internal, and it made all the difference.

Now, when I reflect on my days, I see the love, joy, and possibility that was always there. By rewiring my brain through affirmations, I’ve rediscovered the beauty in motherhood. And the best part? You can do the same.
